UHMWPE Composite UHMWPE

The lightest ballistic fiber in production and the only structural fiber that floats. Beats para-aramid on weight for most threat classes, and loses to it on temperature.

Overview

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is gel-spun into fiber with extremely long aligned molecular chains, producing the highest specific strength of any commercial fiber. In armor it is cross-plied rather than woven and bound with a small resin fraction into rigid or flexible laminate, which is why the product is usually bought as a finished panel system rather than as fabric. It outperforms para-aramid on weight for most soft armor threat levels and is unaffected by moisture, which aramid is not. The limits are thermal: it softens around 150 degrees Celsius and creeps under sustained load, so it is essentially never used where a structure must hold shape at temperature.

Soft and hard body armor

Cross-plied UHMWPE laminate is the lightest route to a given protection level for most threat classes, which is why it has displaced aramid in a large share of vest and plate backing applications.
