Tungsten Bar and Rod

Who supplies bar in this alloy, diameter and condition?

What it is

Solid long product in round, square, hexagonal or rectangular section, supplied to finished size and tolerance for machining. Produced by hot rolling or forging followed by straightening, and often centerless ground or turned.

Typical dimensions
Roughly 0.125 to 12 inches diameter.
Also known as
bars, rod, round bar, flat bar, hex bar, bar stock

Suppliers

Grouped by what they actually are. A mill and a distributor answer different needs.

Mills and producers 3

Companies that manufacture this form. Mill direct means longer lead times and mill minimums, with full melt traceability.

AS9100Pure Tungsten, Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA)

Described as the last and only fully integrated US-based producer of tungsten and molybdenum products. Sintered, drawn and swaged rod, plus tungsten heavy alloy in sheet, rod and plate. Rod, wire, sheet, plate, foil, powder, cubes, spheres and machined components. Melt origin is recorded as not-applicable because this is a powder metallurgy route: doped powder is pressed, sintered and worked to fully dense product, and nothing is melted. Do not read DFARS 252.225-7009 specialty metals onto this. For tungsten the governing restriction is 10 U.S.C. 4872, which bars metal melted OR PRODUCED in China, Russia, North Korea or Iran, so the question to ask is where the powder came from. Elmet is US-owned and operated, but the US has essentially no tungsten mine production, and powder origin is not published. Confirm it per lot.

Tungsten metal parts are a named product line alongside the powders. Specific forms are not enumerated, so this is recorded at the coarsest honest form.

    US meltedAS9100Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA)

Tungsten heavy alloy in WNiFe and WNiCu to ASTM B777 Class 1 through 4, worked from powder to finished part in house. The B777 class sets the density, which runs to roughly 18.8 g/cc at the top of the range -- that figure was previously recorded in the size field by mistake and is a density, not a dimension. Bar diameter and length limits are not published.

Distributors and stockists 1

Companies that hold inventory for resale. Faster and available in small quantities, at a markup. Ask what mill the material came from if traceability matters.

  • Dobbs Ferry, NY · Distributor Service provider

Distributor stock. Establish grade and mill certification per heat rather than from the catalog listing.
