Steel Ingot
Who melts this metal in the United States, and is the melt source DFARS compliant?
What it is
The first solid form after melting. A large cast cylinder, typically double or triple vacuum arc remelted for aerospace and defense use, that is subsequently broken down into billet, slab or bar.
- Typical dimensions
- Commonly 26 to 36 inches diameter, several thousand to 20,000+ lb per ingot.
- Also known as
- ingots, melt stock, VAR ingot, remelt ingot
Suppliers
Grouped by what they actually are. A mill and a distributor answer different needs.

ELLWOOD Quality Steels VerifiedUS melted
Bottom-poured ingot from a 45 ton electric arc furnace with split secondary ASEA-SKF ladle refining and vacuum degassing. Electroslag and vacuum arc remelting are available where aerospace or power generation cleanliness is required. Ingot size and weight range are not published. Ask, because it sets the maximum forging you can source downstream.

Universal Stainless & Alloy Products VerifiedUS melted
Forging quality billet and ingot. Melt routes offered span AOD, ESR and VAR at Bridgeville and VIM followed by ESR or VAR at North Jackson. These are different cleanliness levels rather than synonyms, and an aerospace specification usually names the one it requires, so confirm the route as well as the origin. Ingot size range is not published. Aircraft quality low alloy steels are named among the Bridgeville grades.
