Stainless Steel Forgings

Who can forge this part in this alloy, and can they take the size and weight?

What it is

Parts shaped by compressive force while hot, producing grain flow that follows the part contour and mechanical properties superior to machining the same shape from plate or bar. Sold as open die, closed die, ring rolled or isothermal depending on geometry and volume.

Typical dimensions
Ounces to well over 10,000 lb depending on press capacity.
Also known as
forged parts, forged components, die forgings, rolled rings, hand forgings

Suppliers

Grouped by what they actually are. A mill and a distributor answer different needs.

Forgings are listed among the product forms alongside castings and machined components. MELT ORIGIN re-confirmed 2026-07-30 and corroborated rather than superseded: this is an integrated domestic producer that melts its own material. It remains a per-heat question regardless. DFARS 252.225-7009 status is settled on the mill certificate for the specific heat, not by the company record.

The same form, purchased as tolling on your own material.

Open-Die Forging 2

Deforming heated stock between flat or simply contoured dies that do not enclose the workpiece, working it through repeated bites and manipulation. Used for large simple shapes and for converting ingot into billet.

  • Ellwood City, PA · Service provider

Open-die forging of stainless to 70,000 lb, 57 ft long and 135 in diameter.

  • Bridgeville, PA · Mill

Hydraulic radial forge at North Jackson, Ohio producing bars and forged blocks. Recorded against open-die forging as the nearest modelled process: radial forging works the bar between hammer dies without a closed impression, but it is not the same operation as conventional open-die forging on a press. Confirm which the print requires.

Closed-Die Forging 1

Forming heated stock in dies that fully enclose the workpiece so metal fills an impression, producing near net shape parts with repeatable geometry. Requires dedicated tooling, so it favors volume.

Ring Rolling 1

Expanding a pierced preform between rolls to produce a seamless ring with circumferential grain flow. The standard route for bearing races, engine cases and flanges.

    AS9100

Seamless rolled rings from 4 in (100 mm) to 144 in (3,660 mm) outside diameter. Two Wagner radial-axial mills plus a Wagner KFR 630, fed by 1,200 and 3,500 ton hydraulic preform presses. Diameter is the governing constraint when sourcing a ring, so check the range before the alloy. Stainless is named in the capability statement alongside carbon and alloy.
