Aramid Composite Composite Machining and Trimming

My cured laminate needs trimming and drilling without delaminating it. Who machines composite rather than metal?

What it is

Trimming, drilling and edge finishing cured laminate. Abrasive rather than chip-forming: fiber dulls tooling fast, delamination at hole exits is the governing defect, and the dust is a respiratory and electrical hazard.

In-house machining including 5-axis waterjet; Kevlar is named among the fibres worked. Aramid is notoriously hard to trim cleanly, so waterjet matters here. CTL works silica and quartz as well as carbon, glass and Kevlar, which points at radome and thermal protection work rather than general airframe structure. AS9100D and ITAR compliant; the NADCAP scope is stated only as a 'compliant captive laboratory'. Confirm it. No autoclave dimensions or part size limits are published.

  • Hebron, OH · Converter

CNC routing and 5-axis waterjetting at the Hebron, Ohio site. Waterjet is the normal way to trim ballistic laminate because it does not heat the resin or delaminate the edge. Recorded at medium for the same reason as the pressing edge: process named, material not.

Machining and routing of composites; Kevlar is named among the materials worked. Note aramid is notoriously difficult to trim cleanly. NOTE the application: this is rocket motor and propulsion composite work rather than airframe structure. Confirm the shop is set up for your part type.
